So even though I’ve been to the Fraser location countless times in the past while, it’s actually been a long time since I’ve been to the Deer Garden on Alexandra Road! I don’t know about you, but I rather not have to deal with scratches and rude parking spot snatchers when I’m eating out. But since we were in the area early, I was good with the idea of dropping by Deer Garden for their customizable fish soup noodles for lunch!
See, I can be spontaneous and unpredictable too ;) Decided to stray away from my usual hot ovaltine for a change. A drink is always included in the combo (cold drinks are $1 more and specialty drinks are $2 more). This was alright, not thoroughly mixed near the bottom, but still decent enough.
Parsley and Century Eggs Fish Soup with Instant Noodles, Imitation Crab Meat and Ox Tongue:
For $8.50, you get to choose a soup base, a type of noodle, and two toppings (addtional toppings are $1.25 each). There are a lot of options available for each session, but I usually pick the parsley and century eggs soup base. The broth was alright with a mild fish flavour, although I feel as if the broth is not as fragrant as it once was before. The instant noodles were your typical packaged variety, nothing to say about it except that it was extremely satisfying to eat something so unhealthy. The imitation crab meat was not that great, completely falling apart and a very small portion was given. The ox tongue was pretty good, two large sizes and it was quite tender.
Desert Wings with Ginger:
Along with the combo, you can also order up to two side orders that are $1.75-$.195 each. This dish is one of the $1.75 ones. Their wings are pretty good, crispy and flavourful with a nice juicy interior, although I think that the best wings are still from Wo Fung Desserts.
Pan Fried Boneless Chicken in Teriyaki Sauce:
This dish also costs $1.75. This was a pretty big portion! Hmmm… maybe they read my previous review? ;) Once again, a nice crispy pan-fried skin and tender, juicy meat. I loved that it was only mildly drizzled with sauce and a few sesame seeds.
In general, I enjoyed my visit to Deer Garden. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get and their food’s pretty good too! This is always a good place for picky eaters since you can customize as much as you want out of your meal. It does get busy though, so either go before or after peak times, or be prepared to wait a while!
